The week of Dec. 4 is National Handwashing Week and, with flu season upon us, nowhere is handwashing more important than at the hospital.
Dominican Hospital focuses on disease prevention every day, and the single most important part of that is hand hygiene.
In most cases, you cant even see the viruses and bacteria that exist on inanimate objects but that doesnt mean theyre not there.

CATARMAN, Philippines – The local government unit of this province will initiate additional tourism activities in the Island of Biri to attract more tourists to the area.
Northern Samar Governor Paul Daza told reporters in an interview here that his office has already identified specific areas in the island for tourism activities other than rock viewing, that may attract tourists to the province’s premiere tourist destination.
Daza said Biri Island is the only tourism site in his province drawing a lot of local and foreign tourists. The 2,462-hectare is-land town is endowed with beautiful white beaches, lush mangrove areas and beautiful coral gardens, he added.
The Northern Samar governor said that the main attractions of the island include unique rock formations considered as one of the country’s seventh geological wonders rising a hundred meters above sea level. These unique rock formations were formed through tectonic plates movement underwater generated by earthquakes five million years ago.
He disclosed that the provincial government’s office is opening Biri to other tourism activities considering that the island is a protected area and has a lot of very viable potentials to offer visitors both local and foreign. Daza said that the preserved coral gardens which are a rarity in the Philippines can be an ideal place for swimming and diving and for other underwater sports activities.
Daza also said that many local and foreign tourist visitors have been seen in the area surfing, although the island is not yet known to the surfing world as a site for this popular water sport.

Research In Motion (RIM) has said that it now believes in increasing its promotional activites in order to drive the sales growth to the end customers. According to the company several factors including shifts in the dynamics of the tablet market, and a delay in the release of the companys PlayBook OS 2.0 software are the factors responsible for this phenominon.
The tablet market is still in its infancy. Although a number of factors have led to the need for an inventory provision in the third quarter, we believe the PlayBook, which will be further enhanced with the upcoming PlayBook OS 2.0 software, is a compelling tablet for consumers that also offers unique security and manageability features for the enterprise, said Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO, RIM
The company said that it shipped approximately 14.1 mn BlackBerry smartphones in the third quarter ended November 26, 2011.
RIM believes this strategy will accelerate adoption of its QNX-based platform by consumers and enterprises, as well as help to drive the development of a vibrant application ecosystem in advance of its next generation BlackBerry smartphones, said the company.

Farmington, the defending Oakland Activities Association Blue Division girls basketball champion, moved up to the White Division.
A new OAA Blue champion is guaranteed this winter and Bloomfield Hills Andover, with 10 returning varsity players including four starters, will gladly fill that void.
Expectations are definitely high, acknowledged veteran head coach Jeff Rubin, whose team placed third in the Blue last season. We are looking for a good season and I think we can win (the OAA Blue title).
We have a couple new challenges with Southfield and Oak Park joining (the OAA Blue) which will give us some more up-tempo games than in the past. Last year, we had some close losses in the division to Farmington and we split with Ferndale.
We return four staters, all of whom are either juniors or sophomores, and I think we have the best player in the league in Shannon Wilson, he said. So, we definitely have what it takes.
Wilson, a talented 5-foot-9 sophomore guard, leads the young, but experienced squad. Wilson had a tremendous rookie campaign where she set a single-season school record for points scored with 337.
She can take the ball to the hoop or hit the jump shot, which makes her a very versatile scorer. The unselfish Wilson is also an excellent play maker who will dish off to teammates in better scoring positions.
Shannon is so well-rounded, said Rubin. For us she handles the ball and really allows her teammates to get involved in the game. She pushes the ball quickly up-court, is very strong and plays actively on defense.
Junior guards Rachel Rea and Erika Hill are two other formidable offensive weapons.
Rea, a co-captain who netted a team-high 16 points in the season-opening victory Tuesday night over Ferndale University, is a three-year varsity veteran who averaged 12 points per game last year. Hill is a credible third offensive threat capable of big nights.
Rachel is a phenomenal shooter who had a nice year last year, said Rubin. And, you will see, if a team is focused on stopping Shannon, they forget about what Rachel can do. She has good size and this year has shown the ability to create her own shot and not just settle for the outside jumper.
Erika Hill plays really good defense and also has the ability to score 20 points on any given night, he said. I think were going to be a tough team to stop offensively with the weapons we have.
Sophomore forward Ten-Niah Kinney and junior Jaime Lederman are Andovers other starters. Lederman, Kinney and senior Lexi Sinclair, an accomplished cross country runner in her first varsity girls basketball season, will be counted upon for rebounding at the post position.
The teams other seniors include co-captain Kiki Van Acker (guard), Chelsea Lewis-Spencer (guard) and Emily Atkinson (forward).
We have to work on our defensive rebounding and finishing around the basket on offense, said Rubin. But, we are a very balanced team. We can get to the basket. We can shoot from the outside. We have some post-presence.
For us its just going to be about focusing on the team defense and rebounding to allow us to run the type of offense that we want, he said. If we can do that, I think we can have a good season.
Hopefully for the Barons, a Blue championship season.

In a video demonstrating the scale of the software, Trevor Eckhart found out that CarrierIQ logs almost all of the activities a person carries out on their smartphone without their knowledge. This includes what buttons are pressed, when phone numbers are dialled, when text messages are received and what each text reads. It can also read browser data, even when Eckhart used the HTTPS version of Google, which should hide searches from other parties.
The data is sent to CarrierIQ through both a mobile data connection and Wi-Fi, Eckhart claimed.
Eckhart also pointed out that the software did not require users to opt in. He said it was also difficult to remove from the device, as it couldn’t be deactivated unless the phone was rooted and the OS was replaced.
Eckhart discovered that the software is installed in most modern Android, BlackBerry and Nokia devices. The software may also be active on the iPhone, though possibly only when it’s in diagnostic mode and at a limited capacity. The Verge found the software was not on Android devices which were made in partnership with Google as a pure Android experience, such as all the Nexus smartphones and the Motorola Xoom.
9to5Google claims the software is installed by carriers and is out of the control of the operating system provider and the manufacturers.
Carrier IQ threatened legal action against Eckhart and said the software was only used for gathering information to improve the mobile experience, such as tracking when calls were dropped or when apps crashed.
However, Eckhart’s video shows that this software logs a surprising amount of information seemingly without asking the user’s permission. The issue is shocking the technology world, raising questions about the violation of privacy and the legalities of the software.

LONDON — Royal Dutch Shell is to cease operations in Syria because of ongoing unrest there and in line with EU sanctions, the oil giant said Friday, while France’s Total said it was staying on.
“Shell will cease its activities in compliance with sanctions,” a company spokesman told AFP.
“Our main priority is the safety of our employees of whom we are very proud. We hope the situation improves quickly for all Syrians.”
French oil giant Total said however that it would continue its activities in Syria.
“The new sanctions have an impact on our activities but they are continuing for the time being,” a spokesman told AFP, adding: “Our legal situation is different from Shell’s.”
Total’s Syrian partner Deir Ez Zor Petroleum is not on the EU blacklist, while Shell is a partner of the Al-Furat Petroleum Company, a joint venture 50 percent owned by General Petroleum Corporation, a government-run oil firm, both of which were targetted in the new EU sanctions Friday.
It is understood that the cessation of Shell’s activity will take some time to complete and would not be immediate.
The EU now has sanctions on around 120 Syrian individuals and companies and is already enforcing an arms embargo and a ban on imports of Syrian crude oil.
According to an industry expert in Damascus, Syria’s oil output has collapsed from 340,000 barrels per day to 120,000 bpd due to the narrowing of export outlets.
Shell and Total are the two leading foreign oil companies operating in Syria.
