Best minor league giveaways for 2012

§ April 7th, 2012 § Filed under Take A Trip § Tagged Comments Off

One of the best things about spring is looking forward to baseball season. I tend to react to the arrival of teams schedules much in the way that Navin Johnson reacts to the arrival of a new phonebook. My reason for this excitement is because it means I get to check out the teams promotional schedules and see what kind of sweet swag theyre going to be giving away at the gate.

Just to be clear, Im not talking about the Phillies schedule here. No. Thats too mainstream. Everybody knows about the Cliff Lee and Hunter Pence bobblehead giveways (Monday, June 4 and Tuesday, August 21, respectively). I go deeper than that. The minor league teams are the clubs who give away the really cool stuff to lure in the fans.

Ive scoured the schedules and talked to representatives of the teams in the Delaware Valley and beyond to present you with a list of the greatest Philly-area ballpark giveaways of the 2012 season. Theyre presented below in chronological order, in case you want to put together some kind of swag-collecting roadtrip.

APRIL

April 5: Reading Phillies Ryan Howard/Crazy Hot Dog Vendor Double Bobblehead

The R-Phils kick off their season with their opening day Ryan Howard/Crazy Hot Dog Vendor double bobblehead. If youve never been to a game in Reading, its pretty hard to explain the Crazy Hot Dog Vendor. Hes part hot dog vendor, part mascot, and he roams the park selling hot dogs while dressed to look like hes riding on an ostrich. Or emu. Im not really sure which. Either way, you get two bobbles for the price of one with this promo.

April 11 and 12: Lehigh Valley Ironpigs – Ferrous Bobble-belly and FeFe Bobble-arm

The Iron Pigs are double-dipping by giving away bobbleheads of their mascots on back-to-back nights. I dont know that a FeFes arm is the most exciting thing to make bobble, but it gets points for uniqueness.

April 26: Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs Ryne Sandberg Statue

The lsquo;Pigs are classing things up a bit by giving away a miniature bronze statue of their current manager and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg. Its not the best likeness ever, but its bronze which makes it seem just a little more high-class than a regular old bobblehead.

April 29: Wilmington Blue Rocks Glow in the Dark Baseball

Im not a parent, but if I was, Id be kind of worried about what might happen if my kids were inspired to play baseball in the dark like the Royals single-A affiliate is equipping them to do.

MAY

May 1: Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs Vance Worley Bobblehead

I waited in line for nearly two hours last year to get a Dom Brown bobblehead at Lehigh Valley and I still almost didnt get one. A bobblehead of The Vanimal will probably be even more desired by Phillies fans, so be sure to get out to Allentown early. Call off work if you have to.

May 1: York Revolution Championship Ring raffle

Take a trip out to my hometown of York on the first day of May when the back-to-back defending Atlantic League champion York Revolution will be giving one lucky fan in attendance an actual championship ring. Its not a replica; its the same exact ring that the players will be receiving during the pre-game ceremony. The one fan will represent all York Revolution fans by being given the ring, although that one fan will also have to spring to have the ring resized if necessary.

The ring itself is really cool-looking and the uniqueness makes it, by far, one of the coolest promos Ive ever heard of. (Thanks to Paul Braverman, promotions amp; communications manager for the Revolution for sending me a picture of his actual championship ring which, except for his name, is the same thing the fan will win.)

May 3: Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs Harry Kalas bronze statue

This is the date that any die-hard Phillies fan is going to need to circle on their calendar. Fans will be lining up hours in advance of game time to get their hands on a bronze scale-replica of the Harry Kalas memorial statue that was unveiled by the Phillies last year.

May 15: Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs Jamie Moyer high school bobblehead

The Iron Pigs continue their fantastic promotional schedule by giving away a bobblehead of the Rockies newly-minted No. 2 starter and local product Jamie Moyer dressed in the uniform of his high school team, the Souderton Area High School Indians.

May 17: Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs Vance Worley Replica Glasses giveaway

The Iron Pigs will be giving away replicas of Worleys trademark glasses, which will be, appropriately, sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Center for Sight. Somehow, I doubt youll be able to get your prescription lenses fitted into these.

JUNE

June 5: Lakewood Blue Claws Carl Spackler bucket hats

Its Golf Night in Lakewood, and to celebrate, the Phillies single-A affiliate will be giving away bucket hats modeled after the one Bill Murrays Carl Spackler wore in Caddyshack. Its a stretch, sure, but its minor league baseball – it doesnt need to make sense!

June 5: Reading Phillies Crazy Hot Dog Vendor BBQ Apron

Phillies fans in the Delaware Valley will have to decide if they want to drive to Lakewood for the hat or to Reading for an apron. Either option will come in handy at some point in the summer.

June 14: Harrisburg Senators – Cowboy Monkey Rodeo Night

Okay, its not a giveaway but I had to put it on this list. Oh, Im sorry, have you never heard of the Cowboy Monkey Rodeo? Youll want to watch this video.

June 28: Wilmington Blue Rocks Tubby Raymond Bobblehead

Tubby Raymond won 300 games as the head football coach at the University of Delaware. Apparently, thats worthy of a tribute night and corresponding bobblehead by a minor league baseball team. Tubby himself will even be in attendance!

JULY

July 3: York Revolution John Kuhn Bobblehead

Heres another odd one: York native, Shippensburg University alumni (Go Raiders!), two-time Super Bowl winner and 2011 NFL Pro Bowler John Kuhn of the Green Bay Packers is immortalized by the York Revolution in bobble-form.

The notoriously stingy NFL wouldnt allow Kuhn to be depicted in a Packers uniform, so the Revs chose to portray him in the outfit he wore when he threw out the first pitch of the 2011 Atlantic League All Star Game, which was hosted in York.

July 8: Trenton Thunder Robinson Ca-gnome garden gnome

Heres one you can re-gift to the Yankees fan in your life: The Thunder will be depicting Thunder alumni and Yankees all-star second baseman Robinson Cano in garden gnome form.

July 14: Lakewood Blue Claws Vance Worley Made the Phillies Bobblehead

Another Worley bobblehead! Vance gets the double-bobble treatment this year, just like Dom Brown did last year when both the Blue Claws and Iron Pigs immortalized him in bobble-form. Like last year, Worley will be depicted in his Blue Claws attire.

July 25: Reading Phillies Vance Worley Garden Gnome

Worley also gets the gnome treatment in Reading, just like Ryan Howard and Cole Hamels before him. This one is very high on my list.

July 28: Lakewood Blue Claws Bruce Springsteen Appreciation Night with BruceClaws Jersey Auction

I know, I know, its not a giveaway night, but Im a sucker for a one-off uniform night. The Blue Claws have their yearly Bruce Springsteen night and will again be wearing special BruceClaws jerseys that will be auctioned off.

AUGUST

August 3: Camden Riversharks Unannounced Bobblehead

The Riversharks havent officially announced who will be depicted in this bobblehead yet, but Im allowed to tell you that its a former Riversharks player that also won a World Series ring with the Phillies. Its subject to change, of course, but if youre a Phillies completest, youll want to cross the bridge on August 3.

August 11: Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs: What Could Have Been Night: Lehigh Valley Woodchucks Cap

This is one of my absolute favorite nights on the schedule. When the Ottowa Lynx relocated to the Lehigh Valley to become the Phillies new triple-A affiliate, they let fans vote on the name for the team. For the past few seasons, the Iron Pigs have hosted What Could Have Been nights, where they wear the uniforms they would have worn had the name Iron Pigs not have been chosen.

Last year, the lsquo;Pigs were the Gobblers and wore turkey-inspired uniforms. This year, theyll be depicted as the Woodchucks and fans will be given matching Lehigh Valley Woodchucks hats.

Williamstown resident Marven Chin and his doctor, Stephen Soloway take a trip …

§ January 25th, 2012 § Filed under Take A Trip § Tagged Comments Off

Lupus is a chronic, auto-immune disease that can damage any part of the body such as the skin, joints and/or organs. Auto-immune means the immune system cannot tell the difference between foreign invaders and healthy tissues, and creates auto-antibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue, causing inflammation, pain and damage.

After this diagnosis, Soloway began to transform Chin from the pin cushion he had become to a lupus patient.

Most of his medications were stopped cold turkey, but a few needed to be weaned off, Soloway said.

Chin said it took about six months to get him off the medications that were making him sick before beginning the process of determining what was actually making him sick.

Once Soloway could determine what Chins natural symptoms were as opposed to the side effects of all the medications, he diagnosed the patient with lupus.

Soloway started Chin on the drug IVIg which immediately began to improve his health, and now, he is taking Benlysta the first new lupus drug since 1955.

Dr. Soloway got me back on track and got me back to my normal lifestyle, Chin said gratefully. Im able to have a normal life, work 40 to 50 hours a week, and I got married and have two kids and I can keep up with them.

Now that Soloway has Chin on the right path, he continues to treat his patient.

Hell be on these medications for the rest of his life, Soloway said. Lupus is a chronic disease. It can go into remission, but it cant be cured. Its just like blood pressure. If you take your blood pressure medicine and go get your blood pressure checked, it will be normal. But you will still always have hypertension. If you dont take your medicine, it will be high again.

Now that Chin has been diagnosed correctly and is on a set medical regimen, he takes his treatments very seriously.

He clearly has the disease, but he is very strict with his treatments, Soloway said. His recovery was very fast. When he came to me, he had had symptoms for 10 years. This guy was being tortured by his own body.

Since the day Chin walked into Soloways office, the two men have bonded and become friends.

We used to joke around, saying when I was better we were going to climb the Great Wall of China together, Chin said.

So, when Soloway decided to take a trip to China, he wanted to include Chin in his plans.

Hes a Chinese patient, I saved his life and we became friends, Soloway said. I was discussing that I wanted to go to China and mentioned to him that he must love China. He said he did, so I said, Great, then youre going with me.

In spring 2011, Chin accompanied Soloway to his native land for 10 days of exploring, learning and celebrating life.

It was awesome, Chin said. Looking at the culture was awesome and the food was tremendous. The one thing we wanted to do was eat Peking duck in Beijing, and we did.

They also kept their promise to Chinas Great Wall.

He climbed the Great Wall of China which would have been completely impossible before his diagnosis and treatment, Soloway said.

In addition to large cities, Chin was also exposed to the poorer areas of the country.

We were able to see a whole different part of the world where the people live in a village near a stream where they fish, he said. They also wash their clothes and bathe in the same stream. It really put everything in perspective.

Now, Chin is a quality director for a pharmaceutical company, has rekindled his love of sports and enjoys time with his family.

Im just looking forward to spending more time with my family, he said.

Gwen Stefani: Farm Family Time!

§ January 24th, 2012 § Filed under Take A Trip § Tagged Comments Off

Gwen Stefani and her family take a trip down to Underwood Family Farms on Saturday (December 31) in Los Angeles.

The 42-year-old rocker went out with the whole crew hubby Gavin Rossdale and their two boys, Kingston and Zuma.

3-year-old Zuma played with his parents in a big wooden truck and got an up-close look at some of the farms goats. Gwen and Gavin watched the boys and snuggled on a nearby bench.

Alaska still a cool destination for tourists, ski buffs in winter

§ January 24th, 2012 § Filed under Take A Trip § Tagged Comments Off

In the dead of winter, the air outside swings past zero on the Fahrenheit scale around the Anchorage area. Further north around Fairbanks, it gets even colder. But none of this dissuades tourists who see this as a time to take in some of the attractions that have built Alaskas tourism reputation.

Deb Hickok, president of the Fairbanks Convention and Visitors Bureau, said Fairbanks remains a big draw to visitors in the winter despite subarctic temperatures. She said the big attraction there is the Aurora borealis, while other Alaskan-style activities like dog-mushing and ice fishing also draw tourists into the cold.

Such attractions have been packing the customers into the Chena Hot Springs Resort in Fairbanks for years. The resorts Marketing Director Denise Ferree said the top draw is the hot springs themselves. Of course, Aurora borealis viewing is also at the top of the list, flowed by the Aurora Ice Museum, sled dog rides, flying snow machine tours and cross country skiing.

Free geothermal renewable energy tours are also bringing in a lot of interested groups, including students.

The northern lights in Alaska have still remained a unique business boost for much of the state. Hickok said Japanese tourists are coming in with really strong charter flight numbers to see the northern lights.

The proprietor of the resort, Bernie Karl, always says about viewing the Aurora — you cant see them if you are not here, Ferree said.

Alaskas terrain is also keeping visitors coming to the rest of the state. For example, skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and snow machine tours, not to mention the Spring Carnival in April and the Roundhouse Museum, have helped build Alyeska Resort into a staple of Girdwood.

Anchorage also holds popular tourist attractions in the winter, namely with the Iditarod, Tour of Anchorage and Fur Rendezvous.

Many resorts are gearing up for an anticipated busy winter. Their personnel contend that customers keep coming in during these months. A majority of these customers are domestic but the resorts are seeing more and more customers from overseas.

Ferree said a lot of visitors from Japan, Taiwan, Korea and China come between December and March to see the aurora borealis. The resort is also seeing increased visitors from Australia and Germany. Domestically, Chenas largest visitor groups are from California, Arizona, Florida and Texas.

International tourism has grown so much that the resort has a designated vice president of Japanese marketing who partners with Japanese wholesalers and visits the country twice a year to set up groups.

We are fortunate to have our Asian visitors sustain us during our busy season which is winter from mid December to the first part of April. We are an anomaly for the state of Alaska in that summer is our slow season from May to mid-August and winter is our busiest season, Ferree said.

Alyeska Resort spokeswoman Sandy Choi said theyre getting strong visitation from both the east and west American coasts as well as Europe. She said there are definitely more domestic visitors but that guests from predominant ski countries like the United Kingdom and Germany are up. She said there are more people from Switzerland and France in recent years too.

They come to us because of the skiing, she said.

Girdwood has a new addition this ski season: a season-wide itinerary of skiing and snowboarding professionals, courtesy of the adventure company EpicQuest, which operates out of Alyeska Resort. Customers will be accompanied by reigning free-skiing world champion Jess McMillan one week or ski film regular Ian McIntosh another.

Nine different experts from around the world plus Chugach powder guides will lead guests through their week-long, heli-skiing expeditions.

Famed ski photographer Scott Markewitz will also return to EpicQuest for a week this year to teach skiers how to capture their best moments.

EpicQuest has brought in renowned professionals before but this will be the first time they will be on-board continuously throughout the season from February through April.

Its something we always wanted to do, said Chris Owens, EpicQuest co-founder and vice president of marketing and brand development. He said it can take quite a bit of time to build a roster of professionals.

Youre not going to find another program like this in heli-skiing, Owens said.

The ski business itself for the area is expected to increase. Choi said business has been increasing and the resort sees just more than 200,000 skier visits in the winter.

Owens said the ski business went down several years ago, estimating the economy discouraged such trips. He said it took a while for people to get back out there but business has been slowly increasing.

At the same time tourists explore what a last frontier winter is about, many Alaskans themselves decide its the season to take a trip out of the cold and the dark. Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Marianne Lindsey said California and Mexico are also popular winter destinations for Alaskans. Still, Hawaii is leading the pack here, particularly Honolulu.

During the first 2011 quarter Alaska Air had roughly 160 passengers flying daily between Alaska and Hawaii.

Alaska Airlines started flying between Alaska and Hawaii Dec. 9, 2007. Now, the airline has seven weekly nonstop roundtrip flights between Anchorage and Honolulu and three weekly nonstop roundtrip flights between Anchorage and Maui.

Alaska Air also has flights to Honolulu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai via connections in Seattle.

Alaska Airlines acquired the customer base for Anchorage-based Hawaiian Vacations in 2008. Since then, it started offering its own packages via Alaska Airlines Vacations. There are still other carrier options between Alaska and Hawaii.

Hawaii has had 59,700 visitors from Alaska between January and November 2011, a 17 percent increase over the same period in 2010, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Some Alaska residents do choose to see more of their home state while on vacation. But this is not what such resorts bank on.

Although we do have a good in-state business, and provided an Alaska Resident Rate year-round, our larger groups and visitors are from outside the state either domestically or internationally, Ferree said.

Sanctions must be imposed on Ahmadinejad

§ January 18th, 2012 § Filed under Take A Trip § Tagged Comments Off

Sanctions of this kind were not imposed on Ahmadinejad and this constitutes a severe political and moral failure, especially on the part of Europe which in recent years has taken significant steps to include remembrance of the Holocaust in textbooks and in the collective memory.

The way in which the nuclear arming of Iran is treated is one thing, but in this case we are talking about a basic issue in which Europe can exert the so-called soft power of which it is so proud. It is not too late. There is no reason why the EU should not declare Ahmadinejad persona non grata in its region. While the Iranian president is not keen to take a trip around the Continent, denouncing him as someone who is not wanted there would send an important message to the Iranian people. Sanctions must be imposed only on the Iranian president and not on the state. It is intolerable that such a step has not yet been taken.

There is also a Jewish failure in this matter. In the years when the Soviet Union prohibited emigration of its Jews, the members of that community succeeded in making the lives of Soviet representatives miserable throughout the world. Through demonstrations outside Soviet embassies, embarrassing questions about freedom of emigration at all news conferences of Soviet leaders in the West, and in dozens of other ways – they turned the Jewish question into a burden on the shoulders of Soviet regime. The wide media coverage of these demonstrations helped the effort.

But Jewish communities have not reacted in a similar fashion about the denial of the Holocaust by Ahmadinejad or about his threats to destroy Israel. There is no reason why demonstrations should not be held outside Iranian embassies in any place in the world, why Iranian ambassadors should not be accompanied at every appearance or trip by demonstrators carrying placards with Holocaust deniers – out!

One should not assume that Ahmadinejad will change his tune as a result, but media coverage of such demonstrations would cost Iran a heavy price in terms of its public image.

International Holocaust Day, as determined by the United Nations, will be marked on January 27. It is still not too late from the EUs point of view: It can take the minimal symbolic step of declaring Ahmadinejad an outcast. It is still not too late from the point of view of the Jewish organizations, from the United States to Australia: They can organize protests in front of every Iranian embassy.

There are issues about which one must not remain silent, about which one must protest every day and every hour. One of those is the denial of the Holocaust by the leader of a country and his declared intention to destroy another country.

EIGHINGER: Making realistic resolutions like watch ‘American Idol’

§ January 17th, 2012 § Filed under Take A Trip § Tagged Comments Off

Its that time again. Be sure to change your calendars, the dates on your checks and watch some football.

Welcome to another new year.

Its also time to make those resolutions. You know, the ones you will break before Valentines Day. Raise your hand if you have ever vowed to lose weight, take up a new hobby or visit Aunt Stella more often. I used to be the same way, making all of these promises to myself that I could never keep. So a few years ago, I became more realistic.

Now at this time every year I start a small mental checklist of things I want to accomplish — and actually have a good chance of doing. By this time in 12 months, I will have accomplished most — if not all — of my new goals and feel great about myself. There will be no disappointment about not sticking to that exercise regimen or not visiting Aunt Stella, just satisfaction when I look back over the past year and know that I saw the challenges and met them.

Here are a few of the things on my 2012 list:

ordm; Take that next step with technology: At some point this year, Im going to learn how to add an attachment to email. As Homer Simpson says, Theres a future in those computers, and I dont want to be left at the station when the next train pulls away.

ordm; Change my eating habits: No, not one of those crazy diets, but more of a refining or renovation of my current daily menu(s). Actually, change could be replaced with expanding. My diets rather limited, some might even say mundane. I dont really eat a lot of different things, just a lot of what I like. Ive never seen the fascination of trying new stuff if Im content with what I have already found I prefer. But Ive decided to go out on kind of a limb in the coming year. Im going to try and work in barbecue potato chips into my regular snack rotation. Im also considering branching out and trying boneless chicken wings once in awhile as a break from the traditional style of wing.

ordm; Learn to further embrace my curves: I am comfortable knowing not every guy can look like (a younger version of) Hulk Hogan. As cohort Rodney Hart often reminds me, Round is also a shape. They make 3XLT shirts for a reason, and someone has to wear them.

ordm; Help more around the house: Starting today, I will be offering to watch some of the TV programs my wife does not have time for when she is cleaning the house or washing dishes. That way, Ill be able to tell her what she missed. Im always looking for a way to help.

ordm; Watch American Idol: If I would fail in all of my other resolutions, I know I will keep this one. I believe it has been almost nine years since I missed even a second of this show. Some nights I even watch it twice. Suffering through what was an excruciating first season of X Factor made me realize just how much I enjoy Idol. Americas No. 1 show returns Jan. 18, and I am oh-so-ready.

ordm; Travel more: Not only do I hate to travel, I dont even like to leave the house, so this is a major step. The Little Woman is dying to take a trip, and all I usually want to do is come home from work and head to the epicenter of my universe — the mancave, where all thats good in the world exists: flat-screen HDTV, fridge, snacks, computers and all sorts of sports-related necessities. But being the wonderful husband that I am, I have promised to take her on the trip of her dreams.

Las Vegas? (Not a chance.)

New York? (Seriously?)

No, well soon be going to Springfield for a weekend. Well probably take the scenic route on the way there, travelling through Chambersburg, Meredosia and other little hamlets. It will be the perfect, cozy getaway for two people whose idea of a big day is hitting both Walmart and Target in the same afternoon.

The trip back from Springfield is also fun. The Little Woman always drives on the way home so I can take a nap. In fact, theres another idea for another resolution.

I also resolve to take more naps.

Detroit Pistons 96, Indiana Pacers 88: Lethargic Play Dooms Indiana in First …

§ January 16th, 2012 § Filed under Take A Trip § Tagged Comments Off

The shooting woes of the Indiana Pacers have been a footnote in the season opening winning streak, but theyve been a big part of the season. That Indiana would shoot just 36.8% in the opening half should be no surprise; neither should the fact they only trailed by 8 points at the end of the half. At some point, the shooting problems were either going to come to an end or the Pacers were going to wind up in the loss column.

Indiana managed to stay within striking distance in the first half despite being heavily outplayed by the Pistons who were led by Jonas Jerebko thanks to their ability to get to the free throw line, but that had bad defense, bad second unit play, and showed no energy on their second night. What salvaged the game the previous night against Cleveland, Indiana came out of the half in a big way to barnstorm the third quarter.

That energy didnt show up in the second half and while the offense showed some life early, a lethargic defensive effort gave into the Pistons ball movement and the eight point halftime lead ballooned up to 19 before the quarter was over. While the Pacers have been able to win this season due to a solid defensive effort, there was almost nothing resembling defense in the third. On the other side, the Pacers kept coming up short due to poor ball movement and continued to flirt with 40% shooting, while the Pistons had no problems going above and beyond the 50% mark.

Down 18 heading into the fourth, it seemed there was little room for error in the Pacers making their comeback, but continued lethargy kept Indiana down big despite having arguably their best fourth quarter as a late 9-0 run got them with seven. It was the Pistons, however that continued to get all the energy they needed as a huge lift. From big three pointers to battling for loose balls, they did their job in keeping the game out of reach as the time wound down.

Not only was the final score in the negative direction (with another sub 40% shooting night), but very little of the game was worth looking at from the Pacers side of things. Lethargy defined the night, opening eyes wide to fans hoping to see decent back-to-back games, especially on the road, where they struggled mightily last year.

After the jump, a little bit more on this game thatd best be forgotten:

  • With most of the game in the negative, Roy Hibbert continued to showcase strong post moves and post play early in the season. He looks incredibly comfortable in the post; the next step for this team will be to feed the big fella more, as he only had 7 shots on the night to finish with 9 points and 5 rebounds.
  • Darren Collison also had another solid game with 15 points on six shots with 8 assists. On a lot of nights, this kind of play should be enough to win, but his inability to keep up with Rodney Stuckey really made things more difficult on the Pacers. George Hill as well had another solid game, getting a team high 16 points on 7-11 shooting, but didnt play up on the other side either.
  • Five Pacers ended up in double figures, but the advantage went to Detroit with all of their starters ending up in double figures. Starting scoring was a big advantage for Detroit with Jonas Jerebko leading the way with 20.
  • Despite the struggles throughout the night, Indiana ended the night on a high note by making some runs. They werent able to get the stops when they needed them and werent able to play smart enough when they needed to play smart.

All in all, there just isnt a lot to look back on in this game as a positive. Players played poorly, they played tired, they played down to their opponent, and tonight, it came back gave them their first loss. Theyve got tomorrow to get things back on track before heading to New Jersey to take on the short handed Nets. The Pacers early portion of the schedule is winding down before the Pacers take a trip to Miami and Boston; they cant afford to take on a loss to the Nets.
